Rand Refinery has become the refining hub for Africa and beyond. The company only accepts responsible gold deposits from responsible mining companies.Gold production from South African gold mines has fallen from over 1000 tonnes in 1971 to 203 tonnes in 2011. In contrast to South Africa's continued decline, strong gains across the rest of Africa have resulted in an 18 tonne increase for the region as a whole.
Some 40% of the doré refined by Rand Refinery is now sourced from outside South Africa from Southern, Eastern, Central, West and Northern Africa, providing for an annual throughput of some 450 tonnes.
Gold and silver doré for the refinery business unit is sourced from structured mining operations and producers of secondary gold, on a worldwide basis. Currently, the refinery refines 100% of the newly mined gold and silver in South Africa and 75% of the gold mined in Africa.
The smelter at Rand Refinery recovers precious metals and some base metals from gold and silver bearing by-product material. Material for its smelter is sourced globally - see the map below.
